How is mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) typing used in forensic science

There are various ways by which mtDNA is used in forensic science.

What do you mean by mitochondrial DNA?

Mitochondrial DNA is a circular chromosome found inside mitochondria, which are cellular organelles. Mitochondria are found in the cytoplasm and are responsible for the cell's energy production and other metabolic activities.

Forensic experts employ mitochondrial DNA typing to match the DNA of an unknown sample to a sample taken from the crime scene.

In forensic research, this typing approach has various advantages over other nuclear DNA typing methods, including:

A significant number of copies of DNA (2-10 times) per mitochondria provides a sufficient amount of DNA sample.

A cell can have several mitochondria (1-100) depending on the functions, providing enough samples for type.the sample can be quickly matched to the unknown sample's relatives.

Mitochondria only display maternal inheritance since they take DNA from the mother's mitochondria.

Polymerase chain reaction is used to amplify DNA, which is then sequenced directly.
